From Bulgaria with love: “Aga” by Milko Lazarov

Last Updated: January 1, 2020By Tags: , , ,

In a yurt in the snow-covered fields of Northeastern Siberia, Nanook (Mikhail Aprosimov) and Sedna (Feodosia Ivanova) follow the traditions of their ancestors. Alone in the wilderness, they look like the last people on Earth. Nanook and Sedna’s way of life starts changing, slowly, but inevitably. Hunting becomes more and more difficult, the animals around them die from inexplicable causes and the ice has been melting earlier every year.aga3-screencomment

Chena (Sergei Egorov), who visits them regularly, is their only connection to the outside world and to their daughter Ága (Galina Tikhonova), who left the icy tundra long ago after conflict erupted within the family. When Sedna’s health deteriorates, Nanook decides to fulfill her wish. He goes looking for Ága.

“ÁGA” was produced by Big World Pictures. The film was directed by Milko Lazarov. “ÁGA” had its premiere at Berlinale, as the closing night film. This is the first Bulgarian film in twenty-nine years to be honored with that slot. “ÁGA” has won prizes at festivals in Sarajevo, Cairo, Tehran, Bulgaria and Chukotka. “ÁGA” will open at Film Forum in New York on September 4th and at the Laemmle Royal in Los Angeles on September 27.

Other cities will follow, check local listings.
