DIRECTORS’S FORTNIGHT – With “LOW EXPECTATIONS” Eivind Landsvik brings a story of fame and recovery to Cannes

Norwegian filmmaker Eivind Landsvik makes his feature debut at the 2026 Directors’ Fortnight with “LOW EXPECTATIONS,” a 105-minute drama competing for the Caméra d’or in its world premiere. Already recognized for his emotionally attuned visual style, Landsvik arrives in Cannes with strong pedigree from the short-film world, where his work has quietly built an international reputation.

Before transitioning into narrative filmmaking, Landsvik began his career directing music videos, developing a visually sensitive and atmospheric approach that now informs his fiction work. His short film “SOFIA, EN SOMMER” won the Norwegian Film Critics Award, while “TITS” screened in competition at the Cannes Film Festival before traveling to more than one hundred festivals worldwide. That trajectory positions “LOW EXPECTATIONS” as one of the notable Scandinavian discoveries of this year’s Quinzaine lineup.

The film centers on Maja, a successful musician whose seemingly unstoppable ascent suddenly collapses just as she reaches the peak of her career. Burned out and emotionally adrift, she retreats to her mother’s home in Oslo. Her mother, a teacher, manages to secure her a position as a school supervisor at the local high school. Removed from the spotlight and the relentless pressures of performance, Maja slowly begins to rediscover a sense of stability and connection to everyday life.

“LOW EXPECTATIONS” appears poised to explore themes of artistic identity, mental exhaustion and the uneasy transition from public validation to private reconstruction. The premise suggests an intimate character study grounded less in melodrama than in emotional observation, an approach consistent with Landsvik’s earlier work. Set against the quieter rhythms of Oslo rather than the intensity of the music industry, the film may also offer a meditation on what remains when ambition is stripped away.

With the diverse selections continuing to spotlight emerging Nordic voices, Landsvik’s debut arrives carrying both curiosity and expectation. If his previous shorts are any indication, “LOW EXPECTATIONS” could prove to be one of the more emotionally resonant discoveries of the 2026 Directors’ Fortnight.
