CANNES SHORT TAKES, “Blade of the Immortal”

One of the films to appear out of competition this year at the Cannes Festival is Takeshi Miike’s adaptation of the manga opus “Blade of the immortal” (“Mugen no Junin” in the romaji original). The film combines magic with swordsmen, valor, many good sword fights, and the need for revenge. Manji’s (played by Japanese actor Takuya Kimura) younger sister is killed in front of him. He goes on a quest to avenge her. A mysterious woman appears, who gives him eternal youth and immortality. In another plot, Rin Asano’s (Hana Sugisaki) parents are killed by the swordsmen group “Itto ryu.” She also wants revenge, and pairs up with Manji. Together they go and fight against the Itto Ryu.

“Blade of the Immortal” is based on the manga series “Mugen no Junin” by Hiroaki Samura. Filming
took place in Kyoto, Japan at the end of 2015. Film will appear out of competition at the 70th Cannes Festival, May 17-27, 2017. We will be in Cannes bringing you all the film news from there.
