Bridesmaids surfs on wave of record profits
Bridesmaids, in which girls go bachelorette party-wild, has entered the history books for best-selling video-on-demand receipts. Studio Universal Pictures took the unusual step of actually releasing the record-breaking numbers via a press release; the Oscar-nominated comedy has accumulated 4.8 million rentals in four months, according to Rentrak (via the Universal Pictures press release), which adds up to over $24 million in VOD grosses.
This is funny because an all-woman comedy with no marquee actors would usually be considered D.O.A. and have a lame theatrical opening, the studios hoping to make their money back on long-term video sales. But Bridesmaids has been a major surprise, raking up major box office bucks along the way.
