SOFIA COPPOLA filming Bling Ring
Los Angeles is to Sofia Coppola what New York is to Woody Allen, a storytelling-worthy place where fictional characters and their idiosyncracies come to life.
After Somewhere, which was set in L.A., late last week Coppola began shooting The Bling Ring (the first few sequences will take place in Calabasas, and the set will then move to downtown L.A).
This film is based on a true story. The real-life Bling Ring, also known as The Burglar Bunch, was a group of local teens who robbed numerous celebrities in 2008 and 2009 by tracking down their whereabouts online (Paris Hilton and Orlando Bloom were among the people targeted by the robbers).
These robberies weren’t about some simple joyriding–the crimes were perpetrated coldly and methodically and would’ve continued unabated had some of the members not been caught on close-circuit cameras and identified through their Facebook accounts.
The group allegedly stole more than $3 million worth of clothing and jewelry in 2008 and 2009. A reporter who covered the story for Vanity Fair called the events “completely unprecedented in the history of Hollywood.”
Emma Watson is part of the cast.
