Singing in the new year

Actors Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the prom queen and king of independent cinema, got together recently for a Youtube-bound recording of “what are you doing New Years Eve?”, a song originally written by singer-songwriter Nancy Wilson.

During the languorous ballad Gordon-Levitt has a snoopy grin while Zooey’s deep and troubled voice echoes some kind of long lost love. It all sounds and looks a little ambiguous: where they lovers before? Or have they both had really bad experiences with their significant others on New Years Eve? As any good art, the song raises more questions than answers. In fact, it’s neither. Deschanel and Gordon-Levitt have appeared in two movies together (Manic, in 2000 and more recently 500 Days of Summer) and apparently bond a whole lot over Nina Simone and Harry Nilsson, according to a quote from Deschanel found on the song’s page.
