New worldwide exhibition deal for BROADWAY

New York-based Supervision Media and Broadway Worldwide have just announced a multi-year licensing deal to bring four Broadway musicals to cinemas around the world. That includes Memphis, currently on Broadway and going on a national tour this October, Jekyll & Hyde: the Musical (starring The Hoff), Stephen Sondheim’s Putting it Together and the Grammy award-winning Smokey Joe’s Café: the songs of Leiber and Stoller.

So what this means is that when you’re sitting in a cafeteria in Hamburg, Germany, the Turkish waitress will know the lyrics to the latest Sondheim musical. I think that’s marvelous. American culture–or memes, if viewed at the microscopic level–continues to be the most exportable of all commodities, shortcomings and all.
