EUROPEAN FILM ACADEMY GIVES NODS
(BY ALI NADERZAD) Raising The Queen’s (dir. Stephen Frears) cachet yet again (as if it needed any more raising) Helen Mirren has won the Best Actress award at the European Film Awards in Berlin this week. Mirroring past awards, the EFA also crowned Cristian Mungiu’s 4 months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days as Best Film of the year. This is the the European Film Academy’s twentieth year. It is made up of an 1,800 member body (including, notably, Jeanne Moreau and Sir Ben Kingsley) and takes place in various cities across Europe; filmmaker Wim Wenders is its president. Other nods this year included Best Actor award to Israel’s Sasson Gabai for his role in The Band’s Visit and the People’s Choice Award to Giuseppe Tornatore for La Sconociuta.
