The Troll Hunter

Norwegian horror chic
Otto Jespersen, Robert Stoltenberg and Knut Nærum
Directed by André Øvredal

What hasn’t been done?  We have films and tv shows galore about vampires, werewolves, witches, ghosts, and all other manner of shape-shifting beasts.  Anything missing?  What about trolls? Done. Norwegian-made festival favorite “Trollhunter,” which enjoyed good reception at both Sundance and Tribeca this year, is—I can safely say—the definitive creature feature about trolls.  And to the delight ... more >

Alice Braga to join new sci-fi epic ELYSIUM

It's been announced that Alice Braga, the Brazilian actor best known for her turn opposite Will Smith in 2007's "I am legend," and more recently in "The Rite," has been cast to star in South African director Neill Blomkamp's sci-fi epic "Elysium," opposite Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and fellow Brasileiro Wagner Moura. Little is known about "Elysium" except that it is the follow-up to Blomkamp's ... more >

The Hangover II

Same shenanigans new locale
Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms
Directed by Todd Phillips

I watched “The Hangover II” (a.k.a H2) at the multiplex because I wanted to find out how the sequel would stack up next to the original and wildly successful 2009 original, and also because I wanted to be part of the event of watching the movie inside a theatre packed with movie-goers rearing to go. James Franco

At Screen Comment we love us a good, brainy actor every once in a while—actor/filmmakers? Even better. In the previous two decades there was Spacey, then there was Malkovich, and now it’s the new guard with James Franco. Franco has that wonderful and compound quality: self-effacing while at the same time exuding a certain authority over American filmic output. The same guy who appeared in ... more >

Mr. Nice

Meet Howard Marks, international drug smuggler
Rhys Ifans, Chloë Sevigny and David Thewlis
Directed by Bernard Rose

Rhys Ifans is a truly great actor who’s been relegated to many small, overly quirky roles (think the weirdo roommate in “Notting Hill” or the occult-inspired character in “Harry Potter”).  In “Mr. Nice,” Ifans gets a chance to shine as a leading man, but although the film bears a more than passing interest there’s no denying it lacks a certain spark. Writer/Director Bernard Rose, best known for ... more >
