FIRST PICS: Alice in Wonderland

Tim Burton has revisited Alice in Wonderland. Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter will star. To reprise today’s theme of ‘strange bedfellows,’ notice anything strange about that cast? Depp and Bonham Carter, yay, but Anne Hathaway?

How did this come about? Although she has had a famous career in the movies and was part of some of the highest-profile titles to be rolled out of studios in recent years Hathaway is almost like those gals I won’t name who are famous for being famous. She’s just not Alice in Wonderland…-ish. She lacks that very specific characteristic exhibited by her cast-mates: a little eccentricity, a penchant for evil shenanigans. Boy, Hathaway is a strange casting choice.

Well, it’s done, isn’t it? Let’s have a look at the pictures released by the studios recently. The make-up jobs are gorgeous although even here, in this panel, you can see that Anne Hathaway’s portrait stands out because the make-up is not as fantastic as the others. As a certain Austrian fashion news reporter would say: “Ich don’t think so.” The film which will combine live-action and stop-motion and CG animation will eventually be transferred to 3-D. (It’s set to premiere on March 5.) Mia Wasikowska, who isn’t well-known at all this side of the pond, will play Alice.
